Website tasks let you direct participants to any live URL to complete a task, whether it is your marketing site, a web application, or even a competitor’s site. During the task, you can record the camera, microphone, and screen so you can see exactly what happened.
When to use a website task
Evaluating how effectively users complete specific tasks on a live site.
Testing the intuitiveness of navigation paths.
Evaluating registration, checkout, or other user flows.
Observing how users react to and navigate error states.
Adding a website task to your study
Open your study and go to the Build tab.
Click Add step.
Select Website task.
Type your task prompt and add a description if needed.
Enter the URL you want participants to visit.
You can then use follow-up survey questions to ask about their experience.
Pro-tip: Website tasks work great with screen recording, letting you replay exactly what happened during the session.
Additional options
Click Options on the step to access this setting:
Make required: Participants must complete this step before continuing.
Tips for better results
Give participants a realistic scenario rather than a direct instruction. “You want to buy red shoes for an upcoming event” is better than “Find the shoes page.”
Keep tasks focused. One clear objective per task produces cleaner insights.
Test the URL yourself before launching to make sure it loads correctly.
Next steps
To review recordings and see how participants completed the task, head to video and transcripts. You can also follow up website tasks with multiple-choice questions or rating scales to quantify the experience.
